Praying With PowerLeading God's People

This book is set within a single, sustained meditation on Nehemiah. Nehemiah was a man of the palace who wept for a city he had never seen. He gestated a vision in long seasons of prayer, fasting, and tears. He built an outer wall in fifty-two days and then quietly, in a second twelve-year work, an inner wall of sanctification. He prayed in every register—long alone, short in flight, mobilised with the whole nation. He handled mockery, financial pressure, intimidation and inner betrayal with the same weapon: prayer that led to work, and work that led back to prayer . He is the pattern here. The five chapters that follow trace a progression: the warning against a ministry of prayer that does not truly pray; the necessary distinction between a life of prayer and the work of prayer; how information, Scripture, and a burdened heart gestate before God into a vision one cannot be argued out of; the leadership praying of Nehemiah, day by day, brick by brick; and mobilised praying—the ministers of prayer taking their place as officers of the sanctuary. Nothing of the substance was invented for the page. This is field material—direct, personal, sometimes bracing—offered so that praying people may pray with meaning, and the work of God may not be robbed either of prayer or of practical wisdom. May those who read pray as they ought, and work as they ought, and succeed.
